Wow, det, you must have thought this one up just for me! First of all, though, I'm going to take exception with the idea that "obviously they slept in separate rooms". I can think of at least *four* episodes where they seemed to be sharing a motel room, and I'll list those first:
1.) We *KNOW* they shared they both slept in Scully's room one night during "Jose Chung's From Outer Space"; we got to see Scully waking up and seeing Mulder asleep (in the chair, alas, rather than beside her in bed ) and asking him why he was in her room.
2.) They seemed to be forced to share a room for at least one night during "The Rain King". There was much speculation as to whether they actually shared a bed or not.
3.) I'm assuming that when Scully came to Mulder's room in "Requiem" and they spooned up beside each other on his bed, that she actually went ahead and spent the night there.
4.) This one's a bit obscure, but in "Bad Blood" Mulder came into Scully's room and she said "This is my room; get your own". However, judging by his subsequent actions he simply ignored her. He stayed in "her" room and removed his shoes and shirt, lay down on the bed, etc.
Okay: here are some where they were just talking in the motel room of one or the other of them:
"Pilot"
"Eve"
"Aubrey"
"Home"
"Detour"
That's all for now. I'm sure there are a lot of other ones, but I'll give other people a chance to play.
I, too, always enjoyed the "motel room scenes". I think they provided strong proof as to how much Scully trusted Mulder. A lot of women would be reluctant to allow a male co-worker into her motel room (or to go into his) while they were on a business trip together, for fear that her actions would be misinterpreted as an invitation to have sex. Scully seemed to suffer no such qualms. I think the only time Mulder ever "misinterpreted" one of her motel room visits was in "Detour". . .because I think she *did* want them to make love then, but he wanted to go out and chase monsters in the woods, instead.
