Pursuing the Lord

Seeking God isn't about following rules; it's about enjoying His presence.

Psalm 119:1-8

We all have ambitions and desires, but as believers, we should weigh them against God’s Word. As important as our earthly pursuits, responsibilities, and relationships may be, they cannot compare to the value of a life spent seeking our heavenly Father.

What does it mean to seek God? The phrase describes a wholehearted effort to know the Father and follow Him more closely. Those who pursue this kind of fellowship with God are determined to spend time with Him. They also want to forsake anything that could hinder growth in their relationship with the Lord. God’s committed followers claim His promises and trust Him to fulfill His Word. Their experiences with the Lord bring amazing satisfaction yet cause them to hunger for more of Him.

The Christian life is meant to be an ongoing pursuit of God. To walk through the door of salvation and stand still, without drawing any closer to Him, is to miss the treasures that are available in Christ. Those who seek the Lord soon discover that knowing Him is the greatest reward of all.

How to Seek God

Our longing for the Lord is cultivated through intentional time and effort.

Psalm 105:1-8

Yesterday we learned what it means to seek God, but many of us don’t know where to begin.

Start with the Scriptures and prayer. Set aside time each day for meditating on God’s Word: Listen for His voice, slowly digest what you read, talk to the Lord, ask Him questions, and apply what you learn. Don’t just read the Bible—study it, perhaps starting with a verse or short passage. Some of you may say, “I’ve never been into that.” My advice: Get into it! The deep things of God don’t just drop into our brains; they are placed there through diligent study.

Hunger for the Lord is an acquired taste. The more we pursue Him, the greater our craving will be. However, if we ignore God, what little hunger we have will diminish even further.

Do you find this last statement describes your experience? Then ask the Lord to whet your appetite for Him, and follow through by becoming a seeker. This requires time and effort, two things we want to invest wisely.

To neglect the Lord would mean cheating yourself of the benefits He promises to those who diligently seek Him. No one wants to go after that which is fleeting. Choose instead to pursue the Eternal One—the source of all contentment, joy, and hope.

What do you have to say to yourself?

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His Holy Name.

--Psalm 103:1

Do you realize that you have a constant dialogue going on with yourself? Well, you do and I do, too. And each of has a choice to make.

We can use that self-talk to encourage ourselves and exhort ourselves in the Lord, or we can choose to be negative. And negative self-talk has a terrible affect on our health and outlook.

I read an article a long time ago called, “Happy Hearts are Healthy Hearts.” The article described how our emotions can impact the health of our hearts and our immune systems. Now that’s not exactly breaking news. Because the Scripture has a great deal to say about how our words affect our well being.

Proverbs 17:22 says, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Don’t underestimate the power of your words in your own life!

How about you? Do you say positive and faith-building things to yourself? Or are you critical of yourself? I’ve seen people get so disappointed in themselves that they begin to believe that there is no hope.

But, my friend, with Jesus there is always hope! We have to tell ourselves that and continuously remind ourselves of that fact.

Listen, the psalmist understood the power of his own words. In Psalm 103 he was telling himself to bless the Lord with his whole being! He knew when he lifted up the Lord, he was lifted up, too! You and I need to remember this every day.

I want you to do something right now. I want you to talk to yourself about the Lord and remind yourself of all the ways He has blessed you. And always remember His goodness, His power, and His grace in your life.

DON’T UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER your own WORDS HAVE ON your life!

Still Here...

Living Fully in your appointed time

by David Jeremiah

p 18

It was true for Jesus. He said, "For this purpose I came to this hour" (John 12:27).

And it's true for you and me. To make sense of our lives and our times, we have to acknowledge we are here on this planet in the will of God, in the timing of God, and for the purposes of God. You were born at just the right moment on His calendar. He already knows the moment of your homegoing, and you are where you are in His speed. You are where you are in His will, in His timing, and for His glory.

Embrace Your Appointed Time

If that's true, you should seize your calling to the world around you. Don't push the world away. Run to it with truth and grace. That's what Mary did when the angel Gabriel appeared to her....

Let that be your response too. The Lord has placed us in these times, knowing the difficulties are great and the days are fleeting. He knows exactly how close we are to the precipitous moment of the Rapture. He knows how many days are left and how many hours, minutes, and seconds.

How exciting to serve Him now, in times like these!

We must be like David, who served his own generation and then fell asleep (Acts 13:36).

p 19

Maximize Your Appointed Time

Here's the thing that most excites me. While we are here to serve our own generation in the timing and choosing of God, our works will ripple into all the other generations yet to come until the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. When we maximize our appointed time to serve the Lord with all our heart, the results will be multi-generational. Our works will follow us (Revelation 14:13).

We're the recipients of the ministry of all past generations. The apostles who turned the world upside down, the martyrs who perished in the arenas and at the stake, those who were the pastors and evangelists of the past, the godly parents and grandparents who, generation by generation, raised their families in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

While we're awaiting the return of Christ, we're to keep our lamps ready, our wicks trimmed, our message clear, our witness strong, our hope bright, and our lives pure. We're to declare His praises to the next generation and entrust the teachings of the Scripture to faithful men and women who will teach others also.
