Trusting God when bad things happen

Now we see through a mirror darkly, but then we shall know even as we are known!

--1 Corinthians 13:12

Throughout the years there have been many times when I’ve had to say to people, “I honestly don’t know why this thing has happened in your life.”

The fact is there are countless times when you and I will never know why certain things happen… not this side of eternity anyway.

Now, you could ask God to help you understand. The Scripture says if any of us want to know the wisdom of God, we can ask Him. And in His wisdom, God will either answer you or He will not.

But listen, when we are facing a tragedy or sorrow… we don’t need answers, we need God… we need His hand and strength! When there seems to be no way out, God says, “Way!” He makes a way when there seems to be none!

You see, just because it doesn’t make sense to you now, doesn’t mean it won’t. God knows and will make sense of it. We just don’t have the right perspective at this time, but one day we will say, “Aha, now I see!”

When you don’t know why things have happened as they have, keep your eyes fixed on Him and do what you know to do. Keep serving God. Keep showing up and being faithful in the church. Keep sharing your faith. And one day… perhaps even on the other side of glory… all things will become clear.

WHEN THERE SEEMS TO BE NO WAY, GOD SAYS, “WAY!”

There is None else

Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.

God is sovereign, and He controls events in the lives of all people....

The word "evil" in today's key verse does not refer to sin, but rather to calamity or trouble that God allows when He sees fit.

A Soldier for Christ

5/2/22

How should we conduct ourselves as soldiers of Christ?...First of all, we stand firm on the truth of God. We believe God's Word by faith. By thinking right and doing right, we have a "breastplate" to protect our heart. We should always be ready to share the Gospel with others. True, humble faith extinguishes all the lies that satan throws at us.

Our minds are protected by letting the Bible direct our thoughts and actions. God's Spirit will bring the Word to our minds in the heat of the battle, but only if we are thoroughly acquainted with it beforehand. Above all these is prayer, our vital link to our Captain. By "praying always" we make known our petitions and receive our orders for action. How well are we serving as soldiers of Christ?

Unprofitable servants

We must remember that the very ability to do God's will comes from Him, so all praise is due to Him. Everything we do is our duty because we have no merits....All our efforts for Him are simply expressions of gratitude for His goodness to us.

...we are very far from the example set by our Savior....

Our Heavenly Father loves us even though we are unprofitable. The response He expects is entirely reasonable: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).

Lamentations 3:20 - 23 My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. 21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.

Habakkuk 3:17 - 18 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior.

Overcoming obstacles and trials

...The assurance of God's unchanging power, goodness, and faithfulness creates trust. This trust fueled the courage of Old Testament saints as described in today's Bible reading. They showed that faith overrides the urge to know every detail of God's plan.

When difficulties arise, we need to seek God earnestly, with complete trust and a living hope. We need to view our circumstances with an eternal perspective, knowing that earthly troubles are temporary. ...Knowing that God is with us, we can trust Him to help us triumph over obstacles that once seemed impossible to overcome - but we must rely on God's strength, not our own. Through Him nothing is impossible.

"I'll keep you in my prayers"

...How often do we say "I'll pray for you" when someone encounters tragic events or unfortunate circumstances? Do we keep our promise...? We should really get the person's name and put him or her on our prayer list.

...If we expect our prayers to be effective, we must be righteous before God in our daily walk....

The Maze

...In the maze of life, however, God's Word gives warnings about which paths not to take...

Warning 1: Don't follow the lust of the flesh.

Warning 2: Don't follow the lust of the eyes...The farther we travel, the more "things" our eyes see to lust after. Eventually we come to the discovery - this too is not the right path.

Warning 3: Don't follow the pride of life. Self-exaltation is a wrong path.

Joseph Kuepfer

Perfect peace

...What do you say to a young mother who had recently lost all five of her young children in a horrible auto accident?..

As I fumbled to express my heartfelt sorrow, I was overwhelmed by her countenance, an absolutely beautiful expression of the perfect peace in her heart despite her circumstances....

"God's grace is suffiicient for everyone, " she told me. "I'm not special." But I disagreed. "No," I said, "I've known you since you were a child, and you've always led a godly life. God's grace may be sufficient for everyone, but those who live in constant fellowship with Him are far more likely in trials and tragedies to seek His healing peace and trust Him to provide it."

Peace is not the absence of conflict or the presence of ideal circumstances, but rather a daily communion with and willing surrender to the Prince of Peace....Regardless of circumstances, He bestows His perfect peace on those who love Him.

Pete Lewis

Hardships redeemed

...My hardships may have been sent by God as a way to get me changed. We see numerous issues in other people, and all the while God is trying to help us see the mote in our own eye.

When we think we have a hardship, we need to let God use it as a stepping stone. Can we get off our high horse and humble ourselves? Can we thank God in spite of the "people problem" and ask how we can be a blessing here?

Relationships

...We need to earnestly pray for God to help us in our relationships. Let's not wait to do this until we face a tough situation. We should ask God for His blessing daily, whether a relationship is struggling or going well. By doing this, we will be better able to deal with problems when they come.

...We Christians have a huge responsibility in this area. We need to have a good testimony before the world.

A Risen life

...When a man dies to his old life of sin, he is buried (hidden) with Christ in God. He then rises to a new life,..The new man has new attitudes that set others above himself, giving above getting, serving above ruling, and forgiving above getting even. He see things not as they appear to the world but as they appear to God.

Love, the Perfect Bond

...An umpire's decision settles things in any matter of dispute. In our own experience, feelings of annoyance or irritation may arise in our heart. They conflict with Christlike love, and we are pulled in two directions at once. If we let the peace of God rule as our umpire, we will do what brings true peace to the situation.

...If we bring every word and deed to the test of the presence of Jesus, we will not go wrong.

Blessings bring responsibility

When we ask God to bless us, we need to remember the responsibility that comes with the answer to our prayer. Every time God gives us blessings, He wants us to thank and honor Him for them. ...

When we ask blessings of the Lord, we must also remember our responsibility to use them for His glory rather than for self-gratification. We are always duty bound to share the blessings we receive.

Fred Beachy

Let's use our blessings in the present world to gain blessings that are out of this world.

Love, our strongest weapon

Love has powerful effects, no matter how people treat us, what they say to us, or how angry they get...."Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good" (Romans 12:21). May God help us always to show love to those who oppose us or take advantage of us, because love is truly our strongest weapon.

The Cross

...For a Christian to bear his cross is to practice self-denial to the extent that he can respond properly to life's hardships.

What is my response when someone annoys me...or takes advantage of me?...A Christian's bears his cross at such times by resisting the urge to lash out and responding graciously instead.

...The cross is an instrument of death to self and new life in Jesus.

Rewarded openly

As we live among other people, God's personal blessings to us will reach out and touch their lives. They will clearly see that God is rewarding us with a peaceable disposition. They will notice the comfort of the Holy Spirit residing within us as we endeavor to comfort them in their distresses. They will also see the joy of the Lord beaming from our faces and will hear it in our speech. In these ways and more, our Father Who sees in secret rewards us openly. But if others give us any praise, we must remember to channel it to God.

Crushed? Return!

Psalm 90:3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.

God has ways of taking man to his extremity.

Let's be alert. God may be letting us experience abnormal circumstances to get our attention. At such times we do well to ask Him to show us any message He has for us. If He does, let's immediately give a positive response. God will certainly bless us for it, and He will be glorified!
