The Liberal government and the B.C. Medical Association have moved to heal the rift between them. They've signed a memorandum of understanding to implement fee hikes and settle disputes by negotiation. The move is expected to head off widespread service withdrawals by doctors, who were upset over the government's move to cancel an arbitration award. Under the deal, the government will begin paying out some of the $392 million promised to doctors. The money will go to fee hikes and higher pay for on-call services. The two sides will also start negotiations immediately to resolve outstanding issues on things like telephone advice, prescription renewals and an agreement for rural doctors. In addition, they will work out a dispute resolution mechanism for future negotiations.
This was one of the BCMA's key demands after the Liberal government legislation that cancelled the arbitration award also eliminated binding arbitration to resolve future disputes.
