IELTS assesses your English proficiency on a scale from 1–9 in four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You have a choice of two tests – IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training – depending on the requirements set by the organization where you plan to work or study.

Find a test date
You can take an IELTS test in more than 150 locations across Canada. There is a test center in each province’s capital city and in many regional cities.
Prepare for your test
Preparing for your test is an important part of the process. Take advantage of our free resources to help improve your language and communication skills. Download the Information for Candidates booklet (PDF, 1,021KB), and check out the sample test questions online.

You can also order Official IELTS Practice Materials which include samples of past Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking sections, complete with sample answers and examiner comments. You can also purchase these practice materials from local test centers.

Are you a native English speaker?
Native English speakers are also strongly advised to prepare for the IELTS test. It is easy to feel overconfident about the test when you have been using English all your life. But, if you want to achieve the best possible score for your test, you need to familiarize yourself with the test format. You can also access preparation materials to ensure you are ready for test day.

IELTS Academic
The IELTS Academic test is suitable for entry to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and also for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English language is used, and reflects some of the features of language used in academic study

Professional registration
In most countries where English is the main language of communication, evidence of acceptable English language skills is a prerequisite for applicants and international graduates seeking professional registration. Required proficiency levels vary between organizations, professions, by country and by jurisdiction. It is up to individual professional registration bodies to determine the IELTS band score and version of the test (Academic or General Training) they require.

IELTS for vocational training
The General Training version of IELTS measures English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context and the tasks and texts reflect both workplace and social situations.

This is the version of the test usually required for vocational training, for example in the construction, hospitality and leisure, and tourism industries.

We trust IELTS to give us a benchmark of English language ability. Though we accept other English language tests, we assess them by comparing directly with the required IELTS score.
