I am looking for anyone experienced in Plott Hounds. I recieved a plott as a recsue dog that someone was starving to death at 10 weeks old. They thought he was a Pit Bull and soon realizedf he wasn't so he became "useless" to them as a "pet" (or whatever they planned on using him for). As an experienced Pit bull owner I was taken in by these people under the false belief he wa a 10 wk old pit puppy who needed help. I later found out he was a Plott Hound Pup who they did not want because they had purchased him under false pretenses, believing he was a Pit (probably, judging by the people I got him from, they wanted to fight him....thank god they didn't know Plott's were tenacious fighters as i found out.) They later admitted to me that he was a Plott and that's why they got rid of him (and were starving him to death which I reported to the ASPCA).

My problem....we fell in love with this puppy as we were nuturing him back to health. He attached himself to my 10 year old Pit bull Jake and my 10 year old cat, Ralphy (who used to sit and give the puppy baths...not anymore...)We decided to keep him.

He learns extremely fast, almost too fast as he is almost too smart for his own good. BUT, walking, although he knows what the command "heel" means he HAS to be in the front of the "pack"...pulling and demading the front spot, often biting Jake and attacking him sometimes....(my 10 year old, completely harmless Pit bull). He also is extremely defensive around his food and treats, often snapping at Jake and showing his teeth with a wrinkled nose and snarl etc...regardless of trying to disipline for doing this. He also like to constantly chase and jump on my 2 cats (ralph, who was his "daddy" and my other cat) who now live on the top of counters and areas the dog cannot reach. and also is beginning to challenge Jake it seems constantly for the "top spot" in the house. He is not yet fixed but we are planning on getting him fixed asap.

SO...my problem....We love this puppy...he's 6 months old....BUT I'm afraid that the 2 days a week i have to work and leave them alone for 5 hours, they will get into an all out brawl and one of the animals is going to get hurt.

He has gotten to the point where he even snapped at my face one day while i was trying to get a kiss from him while he was sitting next to my husband (the ONLY person he respects in the house) and missed my face by less than a half an inch and his jaws snapped shut with enough force that if he DID get my face, he definitely would've caused some serious damage if I didn't back up. I (not my husband)have taught him to sit, lay down, paw, stay etc...not heel, he won't do it...even for my husband.....he's always gotta be the front of the pack...even with a choke chain, which I hate he will not heel. we've tried a snoot loop...choker, everything...but still attacks me and our other dog, Jake when we're on walks if he isn't "top dog". At 6 months he has even went after a full grown 100 + pound deer that grazes in our yard on more than one occasion...without any regard for commands to stop, come tc.

If ANYONE knows anythign about his breed I need help. I have been reading a TON about Plotts ever since we found out what he was 5 months ago...but his behavior is not changing and I'm afraid he will eventually snap and maybe even seriously hurt or kill one of my cats or seriously hurt Jake when there is no-one here to intervene. He cannot be in a kennel, as the people who owned him before us used to snatch him up by the scuff of his neck (which he stil hates to be touched) and throw him in his kennel as punishment. (He also has SEVERE separation anxiety, which was only curved whn he was younger, by leaving him out with jake while I was at work...and everything USED to be fine....)I do not want to give him away to someone who will treat him as a "property" and not a pet...and around here....anyone who hears "Plott" hears hunting dog..and honestly...he's a wimp outside our family. Often wimping out and running or trying to flee when confronted by other dominant dogs or unfamiliar situations. I would just like to know if there is any hope for this pup with my other pets...or if I should try and find him a home with another family or person who he can be the center of attention. I know he cannot be around children...when you run he tries to bite you...and I am so scared that one day a child will run and he will try and run after them like "prey" and bite them as he does me when we run while taking him for a walk.

I'm at a loss...if anyone has ANY advice PLEASE HELP. Thanks.

I am at my wits end. I don't know what to do. I am an experienced dog owner...I've had dogs my whole life and I don't know what to do about him to get him to behave.
