My late father Edward J. McCaffrey, Sr. was a signalman, first class, on the U.S.S. Auburn 1944-1945. He was much older than most of his shipmates at age 44. In 1942 he enlisted for WWII, having been in the Navy at age 17 through age 21. After Okinawa he was put on a hospital ship with very high blood pressure and sent back to the U.S. I do not have much info about the Auburn, since he didn't talk much about his service. He did say that a Kamikaze crashed about 50 yards off the stern of the Auburn when they were at Okinawa.
