Bill,
I realize your post was over 7 years ago, but I just stumbled across it while trying to do the same thing you did in 2010.

It appears my dad, Francis R Sheehan from Bangor, ME was part of the same training class your dad was in. I haven't had a lot of luck finding out much about what happened to them after they left Sampson, however I have two different pictures of an LST hull #1058 that it appears my dad was on.

I also have a class photo of CO 251 if you'd like a copy.

Also, to anyone else viewing this post. I'd be more than happy to share the small amount of data, ie., pictures, if anyone would like a copy. The only thing I've been able to find on LST 1058 is listed below, although I do recall my dad telling me when I was young, that he did go over the equator and was dunked into the ocean as part of the ceremony. My dad passed away in 1997 of Parkinson's.

LST-1058 LST-1058 was laid down on 24 February 1945 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched on 7 April 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Harry Schoeffel; and commissioned on 16 May 1945. LST-1058 performed no active service. She was decommissioned on 30 July 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 25 September that same year. On 13 June 1948, she was sold to the Walter W. Johnson Co. for scrapping.

Sincerely
Bob Sheehan
