Appleton, who received his training at USNTS Sampson in 1944, passed away at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, on August 17, 2011, at the age of 85. I know that he often thought of his time spent at Sampson, and the visits he was able to make to the Station in his later years, with fondness.
