 My uncle also served as a 20mm gunner on the landing craft. I did an oral interview with him on his experiences. His boat was in the first wave at Iwo and it sank on the rocks. He served as a machine gunner for 7 hours on the beach with Marines until able to return to his ship. Would love to see a photo of one of the landing craft from the ship.
