My father was stationed at a Naval Port in Ft Lauderdale, FL in 1942 before he was placed on an LST for the Pacific Theater. He stated that he was a guard for the base that was testing/upgrading torpedo guidance system.

Additionally, story goes that while on duty he properly confronted an officer who would not identify himself and was supposedly awarded an immediate promotion. What was the rank during basic training and after basic training. He ended his Naval service in 1945 as a Seaman 1c. Just curious if this is a tall tale? Any info regarding the port or their purpose would be most appreciated. The same area was supposedly an oil refinery after the war.

Thanks
