My oldest brother Robert J (Bob) McGovern reported to USNTS Farragut in August 1943. In February 1944 he shipped out on the USS General J R Brooke, which he served on until it was decommissioned in 1946. Bob hailed from Dubuque, Iowa, and was 5-9, 135 lbs when he enlisted at the age of 17 and never grew much after that. He had a break in service from 1946 until the Korean War, when he rejoined and was stationed at NAS Minneapolis. He got out in 1957 and married a local girl. He died in 1996.
