Greetings:

My father, Robert Alwin ("Tiny"), served on Mellette during WWII. He was Chief Petty Officer and signalman. He shared many stories of his time on the ship, including Iwo and Okinawa. The ship also was one of the first into Tokyo Bay after the surrender as they had to land marines at a Japanese base there. He had an invitation to attend the surrender ceremony on the Missouri but could not get transport. The Mellette shows up near the Missouri in some photos of the surrender ceremony. I do have some pictures of him and another signalman enroute to Iwo. And I have more posed pictures of what looks like the ship's officers.
Sounds like the crew had some very serious problems with the captain, some of which were shared by an article written by a Christian Science Monitor reporter who had passage on the Mellette.
