I just found out tonight, through my aunt, that my grandfather was on the Auburn and was at Iwo Jima. He also was a radioman (third class). His name was Eugene (Gene) Smeal. He was 32 when he enlisted, so he said a lot of the younger guys called him "Pap" or "Pappy". I do not know where he trained or anything else. He never liked to talk much about the war and passed away in 1983. I have one of his uniforms and a copy of a picture of him in his uniform. If this book may have a picture of him, or if you have any other copies of any pictures that could have him, I would like to see something. We have next to no pictures of him as they seemed to have disappeared to another family member who passed away.
