Subject: Our 100-150k salary should be enough...
In reply to: Lou 's message, "Re: Loyola an attractive place for a coach?" on 14:42:01 02/19/03 Wed

The 125k that Hicks makes should be enough to attract a good candidate.

Though it is a great school, beautiful campus, lovely area, and everything, the major drawback is the academic requirement. Basketball simply does NOT have the leeway the lacrosse program does. LAX players get away with MURDER on our campus.

For example, the year that Jason Rowe was expelled for academic reasons (which, btw, would have merited a game suspension at every other school in the MAAC, even Fairfield), there was a huge lacrosse cheating scandal. Though I can't say who was involved, I can say that EVERY effort was made to make sure the players involved were not given what punishment would have befallen a regular student (certain expulsion).

So as a coach, you come in knowing that you can't recruit guys that can't handle the academics. And it is possible to recruit those students, and to win without people in the stands. You can challenge some recruits like that: 'Put people in the stands.' and they will take that as a call to arms.

THOSE are the kids we have to get. And keep. And eventually we can win.
