Subject: Angel

*This is a poem I wrote for my friend Angel Patterson the day after her funeral. She died in August of 1998... graduated with me from highschool.*

She looked like a doll
In a glass case
And I didn’t know
Whether I could
buy her or not.
Her faced seemed
Frustratingly serious
and her body seemed
Stiff
It took all I had in me
To just walk by
And not look back
at the porcelain face
And I knew
As I walked down the church steps
They closed the casket lid
And I would never see that
beautiful face again
and it frustrated me
The seriousness of the situation
that arose around me
As people drove away
And I was left
holding a rose
to lay upon her final
Resting place.
