your problem could be simple, or very bad. a friend of mine had a simillar problem in his 78 F-150. his would shoot the flame when he first started it after it ran out of gas. basically the engine would flood and the only thing that the excess gas could do was burn upwards. However, one day his truck jumped time and when we got it running again, about 300 yards down the road it shot a 3 foot flame out of the carb, we had the hood off to watch the engine. honestly, unless you know a lot about cars, I would take it to a local mechanic (one that you trust so they don't try to automatically sell you a new engine) and have them check it out.
