Subject: Beacon in the Night
The room is darkened and lies in a hush,
Sheets hugging her small body secure.
Doctors' faces are stern, their words are not rushed,
Family awaits, hungry for a morsel to assure.
I sit, a friend among, but strangely without,
My spirit quietly kneeling, fighting coldness and tears,
Gazing at this fragile one - is she living or not?
Does her soul dwell among us or slipped beyond man's paultry years?
Machines pulse and throb, life's breath in their drone,
Staff tend them, watching numbers and blinking screens,
Masking the soft call of her Father, "Come onward, come Home,"
Replacing it with heartbroken pleas and unfulfilled dreams.
As a young spirit soars from this relm to a blessed next,
I make peace with His will, holding on to His hand,
Picking up pieces of lives tearfully vexed,
Setting my face toward my own future Land.
