Q. My wife has invited a lesbian couple to stay next weekend. She informs me that they are keen to start a "family", and are looking at ways of acquiring the necessary sperm. How can I decline to offer mine, without causing offence?

A. Ah, the dilemmas of modern life. Here's one not dealt with in Etiquette for Gentlemen: Short Rules and Reflections for Conduct in Society, and one might flick through pages of Aristotle's ethics all day and find nary a word on it. However, I think my grandfather may have hit the nail on the head for you with his wise dictum: "I make it a rule never to go anywhere where I would not be welcome back a second time." (I think he was talking about something else entirely, but never mind.)
