Thank you Pat for the amount of time and effort you obviously have expended on this proposal. I hope this idea encourages those of us who have gotten discouraged lately through the lack of attendance at practices and gigs. To be honest, I am excited about the prospect of going to Scotland. I will make the effort to improve as a piper, but I will support the band regardless, if I am not ready. With almost two years to get ready, I think I will make it!

It is a very difficult thing to motivate members to step up the committment to the band. We all have busy lives and many things pop up that take a higher priority. I realize it becomes easier to make the decision to miss a practice if others are not attending regularly, but If we communicate better with the band manager or pipe major about our schedule, we will all be better off.

I try to make practice every week. Even when there are only a few pipers, I can learn and improve. I don't want a medal for driving 50 miles one way, but I am a bit dissapointed when we have a poor showing for practice. I am there for myself and the other members who are there. Since I have been on the pipes for less than two years, I realize my skill is limited, but I have seem a dramatic improvement in my playing. I will continue to come to practice and try to help the band out when they need it. I have put some practice into the bass drum, also. With my drumming experience, I have decent timing and realize I am an asset to the band. I have a lot more fun playing the pipes, and short of soliciting your vote for piper of the year (just kidding), playing the bass drum may be what I need to do right now to help the band out.

I think that we all should look at the reason we come down (or don't) each week to practice. Do we really want to be in the band and improve as musicians, or do we just want to be a part-time associate who gets to keep a kilt in the closet.

I guess if you are reading this, than you have a more than average interest in the band. We have all heard the term "preaching to the choir" but this is more like a statement of my comittment to the band. I intend to continue to come to practice, make my schedule available to be able to come to gigs, and practice on the pipes so I get better. I also intend to fully take advantage of Pat's proposal and make an effort to play my pipes in my Grandfather's homeland.

See you all Wednesday!

Chris
