We just adopted an APBT two weeks ago from a shelter. Not much was known about her, except she is approximately 16 months old, that she was found nursing a litter of pups, has been in the shelter since November 06 and was temperment tested well in all areas, including cats. She is very sweet with us and wants to play with other dogs (only have introduced her on leash) who approach her or runs away from barking dogs behind fences.

Big question is how can I get my cats and her to be comfortable with each other. She barks (very high, yelping sort of bark) at them when she is in her crate. Sniffs and goes down low to crawl close to them slowly when she can. She sometimes stares (not wagging her tail when she sees them). Other times her tails is wagging and she looks playful. We do not let her off leash in the house at the moment, because we are unsure how she will interact with the cats. Cat run into the kitchen yesterday when she was getting ready to be fed. She warned the cat off by snapping at her.

Cats temperment - one is couldn't care less that she is here except when the dog is in her face (she was the one who ran into the kitchen with the dog). The other stays her distance, but is brave and appraches within feet if she knows the dog is in crate or on leash. She runs away otherwise.

Any advice on how to acclimate them or should they always be kept separate? I'd like for them to live at least civilly.
