Subject: Dancing Shoes

Can anyone suggest a place in the US (preferably East Coast) to buy set dancing shoes? The dancers here order theirs from Ireland, but I have difficult-to-fit feet and need to try them on. Thanks!

Don't worry, step dancers do not need set dancing shoes! They are worn at ceilis by women who dance sets. To describe them . . . they are a tie shoe with a separate heel (preferably leather) which is used to make noise. If you attend a ceili you will notice that the dancers do NOT wear ghillies. If you've never been to a ceili -- try one! Live music and lots of fun. They may dance a few figure dances that you know. Set dancing is 4 couples, usually in a square.

Right. What I've noticed at dances and the various videos available that women and men seem to wear any type of dress shoe that are secure on the foot and have a heel and sole that can make tapping noise when they dance (called battering?). I've seen women wearing slip on pumps, boots, 2" heels, anything that is comfortable and secure so they don't go flying off when you really cut loose ;-)

I went to the Milwaukee Irish Fest last summer and had a WONDERFUL time learning and dancing sets. There seemed to be such variety in styles and abilities - another whole new genre of irish dance to learn about.

I wear Capezio Ladies Character shoes. I bought them at a regular dance shop and I think they cost around $70. They have a 2" wood heel with a leather "cap" and stitched leather soles and tie. They kind of look like "old lady's" shoes but they are very comfortable, secure, and make a wonderful "sound".
