From your description it sounds like the cactus was an Opuntia species - one of the prickly pair group. These often have attractive yellow flowers and most pertinent glochids. Glochids are found in the areoles. These are the specialised places on cacti from which all spines develop. Glochids are however, a rather specialised spine. They are tiny - mass produced - and each one is barbed so that they can burrow into skin. They make the cultivation of some opuntias rather hazardous.
One way of removing them is to use sticky tape - much as a woman does for hair removal. Other than that it becomes a matter of letting ones body gradually remove them naturally as it will for any tiny splinter.
Anyone growing cacti should have up to date Tetanus protection as should any gardener anyway. Regards Didge.
