Echinicactus grusonii or Golden Barrel spines are not poisonous but can be very irritating if they break if in the flesh. The spine usually works itself out after a few days or a week or two. If pain persists or the initial swelling does not go down after a few days see a doctor. Cheers, Ian Hay
