Hi Naomi. Took a copy of your photo to our C&S Soc. Committee meeting last night. I am primarily a mesemb grower so this is a little outside my area of expertise. The consensus is that it is probably a bacterial or fungal infection. Ferocactus are prone to this if cultural conditions are not ideal at all times and that is quite difficult to achieve in our immensely varied climate. IE drought to flood and not much else in between. Try a post to the cacti-etc forum as the experts thereon probably have a cure.
