Subject: VCCS requirements for online courses

I hope I followed the instructions and at the very least you get this message! On the question of requirements for online courses, you might want to refer to the Administrative Procedures for Distance Learning Activities Among Two or More VCCS Colleges. They are guidelines for dl courses -- most of which are based on compressed video classes, not online courses. Appendix D might be the most relevant section -- VCCS Distance Education Network -- Academic Standards for Distance Education Courses. Section "a" refers to proctored or supervised activities but I couldn't find any reference to number of activities. This was an issue SACS was interested in -- how do you maintain the integrity of the courses and assure that the student is actually doing the work. I would think you could still have exams online but require the student to go to a site to take the exam under some supervision. This is an area that needs lots of work! I keep hearing that the more opportunities (immediate feedback) you provide students to check their progress -- reviews, activities, quizzes -- the better. The Administrative Procedures are on the VCCS web site -- under Distance Learning. Perhaps you will come up with some suggestions for the guidelines -- to make them more applicable to online courses. It looks like you are off and running. Please let me know if you need anything. Ken, thanks for inviting me to your site. What you are doing should make it easier for faculty to work together. The courseware projects seem to be a hit with the faculty.
