Subject: Web site information

The reason I was able to put together this Web site so fast is that I did a Web site for someone else and I simply used it as a template and changed the headings and content and put it into a new directory. Even the names of the files (the different pages) are the same as the original.

It is an easy matter to do a file transfer if I have permission and a password from your system administrator. If you talk with your administrator he will be able to make the arrangements. I transfer files from home to my school server and vice versa all the time. I also do this with a publishing company in California. You need a file transfer program. For educational purposes the one from IPswitch Inc. is a free download. You do not need this, however, unless you are the one who is doing the file transfer.

The main program I use for my Web work is FrontPage by Mircosoft. I normally just use the Editor portion of the program. You are simply writing an html document and saving it to the directory on your server where your html files are. At that point they become live on the Internet. I do this from either school or home constantly.

If you have a text document that is not written from an html program, like FrontPage, you have two options. You can save it as an html document if this feature is available to you with Word or WordPerfect. Click on file and look for a heading that says "save as an html document." If you do not have this available to you, you can open up the document with your html program (FrontPage) and tweak the html codes to make it look the way you want it to. A great book you can order that will help you with this is HTML for the World Wide Web by Elizabeth Castro. The publisher is Peachpit Press. There is also a lot of information on the Internet on the html language.

Sometimes a graphics program comes in handy. I use this when I want to make a graphic out of text. This is a good thing to do for headings, but is not required. The simplest program and the easiest to use is the one that comes along with the Microsoft suite series. It is called Image Composer.

The only other program I use is a spreadsheet to record and upload my grades. Any spreadsheet will allow you to do this. Again just click on File and look for something that says "save to the Internet." I select the portion I want to upload and save it to my Internet directory. If your spreadsheet does not give you this option (if you care to do this) contact your system administrator.

If anyone cares to use our Web site as a template, I can help you through the process. If anyone has any questions about any of this, just ask me using this Forum, and I will respond.

Cheers, Ken
