Subject: Tutorials and PowerPoints

I am writing this while my class is taking their final exam. An advantage with using this forum is that you can access it from any computer that has an Internet connection.

About the reputed requirement that all online courses meet at least twice a semester - this is of no concern to me. I let the Independent Learning Department here at NRCC take care of such things. We have over 50 courses taught as IDL, that's 18% of our total enrollment. It is up to the IDL Department to handle all the details and legalities of off campus learning. I just develop my courses within the framework they give me.

Concerning the online tutorials. I have developed extensive tutorials using the PowerPoint program. By putting a multiple choice question at the top of the page and the correct answer and an explanation on the bottom, students can see the question without seeing the answer. I tell my students to use these on the computer after they study the material. They can view them online (these are the .ppz files) or they can download the .ppt files to view within PowerPoint. If they do not have PowerPoint, they can download the PowerPoint Viewer from Microsoft and view them within the Viewer. Even though students can print the tutorials, I tell them not to do this because then they get into the habit of memorizing. Check out the tutorial I did at http://www.nr.cc.va.us/eco201/grant.htm

The advantage of using PowerPoint is that almost everyone has the program on their computer, and if not, the Viwer can be easily downloaded. Also, the tutorials can include graphics. Making graphics (graphs and charts) is easy using PowerPoint.

A few things I have learned about PowerPoints. As far as doing tutorials using hyperlinks, you will need PowerPoint 97. If you save them as PowerPoint 95 files, you will lose the hyperlinks. Also, when you upload the files to the Internet when using PowerPoint 97, it turns them into PowerPoint 95 files. The best way to make them availble to your students is to save them as PowerPoint 97 .ppt files for downloading and then save them as PowerPoint 95 files to be viewed online. You can also make the .ppt PowerPoint 95 files available for students who do not have PowerPoint 97 yet. Another tip, I find it a lot easier to use my old PowerPoint 95 program to upload files to the Internet. There are fewer problems and you do not get all those extra files that PowerPoint 97 generates. If anyone has questions, let me know and I will be more detailed.

To get an idea of what I mean you can view a sample of the different ways to make files available on the Internet at http://www.nr.cc.va.us/eco120/it.htm. I am going to do all of my courses like this starting this summer.

I hope you all got my e-mail message that Carole Schultz is cutting our checks. This is a geat community college system to work for and I appreciate all of the help and support that the systems office has given us. [end of message]
