I have a 2002 GTi with the AWP (180hp) motor.
and my wife has the equivilant jetta Wolfsberg Edition.

my car cost about $22K
is fully loaded. (exept for Auto Transmission)
Leather, heated seats. Pwr Moon roof, Premium cd/tape stereo with 8 speekers, full size 16" spare.
stock 17" aluminum wheels, with 225/45-17 tires.

we love our car's
I took mine to the track a couple of months ago, only performance mod is an air filter.
I ran a 15.1 @ 94Mph completely stock, full interior, full gas tank, stock 17" wheels and tires.

name something from japan for under $30K that will do that.
and is that comfortable.
