Subject: Diesel Rabbit oil pressure too high

I have an 81 Diesel Rabbit. The oil pressure blew out a filter. I put a gauge on it and blew the guage. I took out the pump (original)and disassembled the relief valve. Air pressure showed it opening above 100psi - but always opening. Took a bit of spring off and now it opens at lower pressure 80 or so. I still have high pressure when cold. Is that valve sticking? There seems to be no reason for it to stick, moves smoothly. I have a friend with a similar problem on his Rabbit. Are we missing something?

thanks, chris
