I used to do mine in a temp color - that way you don't get harsh lines when it grows out - I think I used auburn or light brown - something to darken/red (but not THAT red!) - the semi-permanent stuff never seemed to damage my hair, just actually made it really soft. I don't know what you can do to lighten that isn't harsh though.
