As Goku and Paikuhan fight in a heaven tournament, an accident occurs at King Yamma's "Check-in Station." The machine that cleanses impure souls before they go to hell isn't taken care of properly, so it malfunctions. The kid that was supposed to have been taking care of the machine begins to transform into some large being and everything around King Yamma's place is sealed in jelly-bean like orbs.

Goku is alerted about the disruption, and how the seal between the dead and living dimensions will go out of control, causing the dead to be able to come back to the earth. Everything begins to go out of control on the Earth, as dead people swarm through the city. Goku takes Paikuhan and teleports to King Yamma's place. Yamma tells him the monster is on top, and they both fly up and see a big, fat monster named Janemba, who acts and talks like a little kid. Unfortunately, Janemba is very strong. Goku tells Paikuhan to try to break the seal to get to King Yamma, while Goku takes care of Janemba. Goku gets Janemba to follow him down into hell. Janemba falls after him and lands, creating a bunch of little versions of himself. Goku fights them off and turns Super Saiyan 3. He attacks Janemba until Janemba transforms into a tall, demon-like monster with horns.

During all this, Bulma and the others summon Shenron, but Shenron is unable to restore everything back to normal. Gohan and Videl get in their Saiyaman suits and fight the dead. Freeza makes an unexpected appearance.Gohan gives one punch to his stomach and created a ki ball inside his stomach and blows him up. Goten and Chibi Trunks, meanwhile, fend off Hitler's army and eventually go Super Saiyan. In hell, Goku attempts to fight Janemba as SSJ3, but is actually no real match for Janemba. When things start to look bad, Vegeta shows up, only to get beaten. Goku and Vegeta hide in some kind of mountain made out of spike balls, and Goku tries to convince Vegeta to fuse with him to defeat Janemba.

After a long time of trying to convince him, Vegeta finally agrees, and Goku shows him how to do the fusion dance. Vegeta can't believe that he has to humiliate himself that way, and they practice for a bit. They eventually do the fusion dance, but Vegeta makes an error, so they're stuck as a very fat, short Gogeta for 30 minutes. After actually lasting that long, they split apart and attempt to do the fusion dance again. They are interrupted by a blast from Janemba, but Paikuhan arrives, telling Goku and Vegeta he'll hold off Janemba while they fuse.

Paikuhan knows a weakness of Janemba is cursing, so he curses at Janemba. Then, he attempts to fight him, only to lose as Goku and Vegeta become Gogeta (right after, Goten and Trunks fuse to become Gotenks, to finish off Hitler's army). Paikuhan falls to the ground after getting his head smashed by two fists to both temples. Gogeta kills off Janemba pretty fast. When everything clears up, the boy that was transformed into Janemba is back to normal, and later Vegeta departs Goku. On the way home, Goten and Trunks tell Videl and Gohan that they know why everything went back to normal, but say it's a secret. We also see that Shenron is still waiting to grant a wish.
