Dramatic, difficult yes, and so different from any episode ever shown on Bonanza. The episode guide says he did some re-writing but not a lot. I think Dan was a great actor - he could have pulled it off I think but would have been a different episode for sure. The episode guide also says Michaels response to an angry viewer (because Alice died) was "we all needed a good cry". It was filmed in June and he died in May so I can't imagine the raw emotions that must have been present on the set. The crying embrace I think would have been filmed differently for Dan - I can't see that played out either between Dan and Lorne. It was a great episode but not one I have watched again very many times. So emotional.

Thanks Tony and Kathy, for your intriguing comments on "Forever," certainly an unusual episode in the history of Bonanza. I caught it on MeTV the same week that Tony did, and INSP also ran it earlier in 2018.

It does seem like the marriage story was tailor-made for Little Joe, perhaps a better "fit" than for big brother Hoss. But we never got to see the original intended version with Hoss as Alice's groom, so it's hard to say how it would have played out. Michael Landon was a great intuitive actor, and he and Lorne were very moving in the Joe/Ben crying scene. It probably would have been a bit different with Hoss and Ben, and in fact might have been Hoss, Ben and Joe all together for that scene.

Hoss Cartwright did shed some tears in at least one episode that I recall, season one's "Feet of Clay." Dan Blocker was, as Kathy said, a great actor.

Kathy's quote from Michael that everyone "needed a good cry" certainly makes sense, given the tragic passing of Dan Blocker just a month before filming on the episode commenced.

I do like "Forever," including the depiction of Joe's relentless search for the men who killed his new bride, Alice Cartwright.

Tim

this episode in my opinion did seem to fit the Little Joe character better than the Hoss character. I remember as a child reading that some people actually believe that this episode was one of the reasons the show was taken off the air. After 13 or 14 years people were just sick and tried of women who were engaged to Cartwright men dying off and Joe lost more brides that way than any other Cartwright. The show was pleasant in the first part but very gloomy toward the end. the fans were sad enough for over blockers passing and a gloomy episode like this i think helped seal its fate
