Subject: David Canary Loses His Bonanza Contract, May 20, 1970…

Hartford Courant-May 20, 1970, Marilyn Beck

David Canary maintains that he was the most surprised guy in town when he read that he wouldn’t be re-signed for Bonanza. Producer David Dortort’s camp said David made unreasonable contractual demands. David counters that he thought they were going through run of the mill, new season negotiations.

Ironically, this comes just a few weeks after he told me his future seems rosy on the top rated show.

“There was trouble for a while,” Canary said then, “when Dortort wanted to bring in a new teenage cast member who would have been competition for me. That plan was dropped, though, when Mike Landon came to my aid. I’ve never seen Mike lose an argument, because he’s got the brains and the talent to back up his words.”

Looks as though Landon’s just lost his first bout, and Canary a series.
