Subject: NBC cancels BONANZA, November 8, 1972…

It was exactly 50 years ago on this day Bonanza was canceled by NBC executives in early November 1972. The day of cancellation came on November 3 as the crew was told by Richard Collins. They day the actors were told was on on Monday, the 6th, and the final day of filming on Wednesday, the 8th. Lorne Greene was so upset, he refused to show up the next day and commented that even a caretaker should be given 30 days notice. The final day of shooting was on the 8th and Michael called his NBC publicist buddy Bill Kiley and had him and some of the other NBC guys come over to Warner, where he was going to announce the end of the series. Bob Miles just returned to the show and was at the rap party, and he said to me, ”The booze was flowing everywhere.” The link I am attaching shows most of it although there’s a little bit missing here and there with Mike in costume. By the way, he had just signed a new contract as executive producer in charge of future television projects. After the way he and the others were treated him at the end, and it’s obvious why.
