Subject: The Ranch

Hi Rick!

My Wife has recently returned from South Lake Tahoe. While she was there, she made the short trek up to Incline Village, and the place formerly known as the "Ponderosa Ranch Na." As we knew, it is all closed up, but she took a few pictures for me anyway. She ran into a few locals up there, and found that they were all a little sad that it is not open any more. I'm glad we made it, just before it closed. And happy at least that the Ranch House is still in tack.

She also found the Starbucks at Incline, and the Bonanza Collection donated by Chuck Greene. She also met the Mayor there, who was enjoying a morning brew.

She was turned on-to The "Bonanza Gold" Magazine and picked up a few old copies for me. Is that still in publication? Do you know?

Also. I'm trying to figure out from "Google Satellite Maps" where WAGON CAMP was. Can you help? Was it just off of Co. Road 343 on the Ranch Property?

I really enjoy your web-site. I frequent it. It is pretty extensive! Good work! What is your background? How did you get so involved with Bonanza? Did you begin by just being a fan?

Hi Gary,

Busy day! Hmm, Wagon Camp is on the property at 7,400 feet. The paved road they'd take the motored cars with the passengers in tow to the top of the vista that overlooks Crystal Bay and Stateline Point. On the way down, it takes you right back to the ranch house and you get off. I was there in 2001 and did a full film shoot and video, too. I did the ride down to the house with my SONY HI8 Cam.

Actually, the vista point was only used in 10's "Salute to Yesterday" and later, in the Bonanza TV movies (note: David Canary's cast credit in season 10 was shot there, too). They originally had a small train with cars on the track, that'd go up the mountain. Mike Landon would get in the engine and take the fans up there in the late 60's and early 70's.

I started watching Bonanza in reruns at age 17 (I did see the final season in 1972, but was fuzzy) and I grew up with Michael Landon's work. I'm a little bit of everything, when it comes right down to it! Will I live to be old? I'm still young at 45, but in my mind, it's not the number of years you live, but what you accomplish in life. There's one person from this forum and site that cannot be replaced in my life, so when I do go (without complaints) I can look forward to being with her one day. For now, I will enjoy what time I've been given on this Earth. I'm as REAL as a man comes. If my second wife read this last paragraph and she'd be upset, but I could care less! LOL! Stupid blonde. Ha ha.

Hi Rick!

It appears that you became a very ambitious fan after 1972! I'm 52, and I wish that I had come accross your web-site before I visited the Ranch myself, a year or so before it closed. I would have enjoyed the trip to the Ranch, and the surrounding area that much more!

I wish I could have joined you on your trip to find all of the locations! These days I watch the show, and challenge myself to identify the 'on location' scenes. (Just for fun!)

Looking forward to the future release of the rest of the seasons.

Oh, try Terra Server (Microsoft's Terra, I think) online for Incline Village and I'll bet you find the Camp. First, type in the state and street address and you'll find 100 Ponderosa Ranch Way and you'll see a road (white line) zigzagging to the top. May take you awhile, but you'll find it and you have the elevations listed as they're USGS quad maps. I was there about 10 years ago on the map site and was studying them for reference. Of course, a map in person is useless. Just the eyes and me. BTW: Dave Dortort's big hobby was MAPS. He loved collecting and studying them in all countries.

Thanks! I'll try that if I can figure it out. I can see the roads on "Google maps satellite", I just don't know which road leads to Wagon Camp?

Hi Ruth!

Thanks for the info. When my wife was down there, it happened to be over our anniversary, and she was busy with our daughter's basketball tournament in South Lake Tahoe. She was feeling a little bit bad about the timing, and drove up to Incline Village to give me that latest up-date. She happened upon these magazines and thought I would like them.

I'm just a plain old Bonanza fan, and as I'm finding out, it still has quite a following. I'm glad. And I'm hoping for the release of all the seasons!!!
