It's not just that he was never in combat. It's that he was the senior non-commissioned officer in his unit and when he found out they were deploying to Iraq, he retired immediately. More than immediately, hastily with no transition plan, leaving his young soldiers to deploy without him. It was absolutely despicable, and numerous people in his old unit have spoken out against him for this cowardice.
