Subject: NYPD bans dirty corrupt ex-cop Michael Dowd after brazen visit to police headquarters
In reply to: Al Z 's message, "This clown Dowd has his photo up at NYPD headquarters like its a WANTED poster!" on 14:28:10 06/06/23 Tue

One of the most corrupt cops in the history of the Big Apple has been banned from police headquarters after a brazen visit in which he photographed himself for Instagram inside the NYPD’s Lower Manhattan nerve center.

Disgraced ex-cop Michael Dowd, 62, is now pictured on signs posted at security booths near the public entrance to One Police Plaza, photos of which were obtained by The Post.

“Terminated from the NYPD and convicted Felon,” reads one of the notices. “If he attempts to gain access to [headquarters], MUST STOP DO NOT ALLOW ENTRY.”

Dowd was fired from the force after he was convicted of shaking down drug dealers, stealing their stock and selling it himself when he worked as a cop in Brooklyn during the late 1980s and early ’90s.

He spent 12 years in prison — but it looks like the NYPD hasn’t quite forgiven him.

The signs — which include the handwritten demand “Do not remove from booth” — are likely the product of Dowd’s surprise April 14 visit to the Shield Unit, which is on the second floor of police headquarters.

The shamed former officer — whose illegal habits were detailed in the 2014 documentary “The Seven Five” — posted a photo of himself to Instagram that day, alongside a snarky caption.

“At @1policeplaza finally getting my exit photo,” Dowd wrote. “#NYPD #thesevenfive.”

“I’m a funny guy,” Dowd told The Post at the time. “I have a sense of humor. I was poking fun at myself. Had I done the right thing I would have been able to honorably take a pension.”

Dowd said he was there with a retired cop who needed a new ID. The cops working the entrances didn’t hesitate to let him in, he added.

But some didn’t think Dowd’s antics were so funny.

“It’s a bad look for the police department,” said a retired cop who worked during Dowd’s tenure.

“One of the most corrupt cops you’ve had taking pictures and making jokes,” the cop said. “They should investigate who let him in there.”

NYPD brass took notice.

Following the visit, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell ordered a review of the process by which retirees’ guests are granted access, a police source said.

The new signs also banned Theodore Hanlon, a retired NYPD sergeant who is “known to fraternize with convicted felon Michael Dowd.”

Dowd did not return a request for comment Sunday.

Some comments from cops on the story:

Dowd was facing serious drug charges just a few Years ago on Long Island. I'm surprised he is out of prison already. NYPD should not let any convicted felons in Headquarters as a guest.

How does this bum support himself?

I fully support cops but this piece of $%&# is a disgrace to the NYPD. He shows absolutely no remorse for what he did. He still jokes about it and he left a permanent stain on the Seven-Five. Disgusting human being.

All cops are corrupt and take bribes. They shake down businesses and working class people.

I laugh when they get KIA.

A smart ass convict who brought disrespect to the department found another way to disgrace it. We can’t expect everyone at the desk to refer to a list of thousands of convicts when the public comes calling. Good they have banned him now. But what about the guy that brought him into the facility? He should be banned as well for poor judgment.

Dowd does not belong at 1 PP. But this story just gives him more exposure and helps him put a thumb in the NYPD's eye again. No one would know or care if you just let this non-important and old news just die on the vine. I would think that Dowd's name would pop on the computer as persona non grata if he was to visit even without the poster.

It is not right that the POST did not blur out the sgt's. name date of birth and tax number. I believe he brought Dowd with him at 1 PP. He was not trespassing. Is not convicted of a crime. Yet you post his info on the internet. That is wrong

This is what happens when Mayor Adams and Commissioner Sewell decide to remove police officers from its 1PP security unit to send out on the streets to a random precinct for omnipresence. They are doing it to all police buildings that are meant to be secure. They don’t care about cops safety. Leaving most cops alone on post without a partner for backup. They just DONT CARE!!

I’m not defending him but it’s funny how a progressive would say violent ex-felons deserve a second chance but a convicted ex cop doesn’t.

Speaking as a retired cop, they’re right. He doesn’t deserve a second chance from us. He betrayed all of us

He deserves a second chance, but not in any police agency. There are long term consequences when you’re a convicted felon in certain careers.

“They should investigate who let him in there.” lol!!!! seriously? so you want to get the poor cop who works the security booth in trouble? is he supposed to memorize the names of every corrupt NYPD cop from the past 50 years?

They should also investigate who made the “do no allow” signs.

They mean the retired cop who walked him into the building not the born in 2001 cop working the door.

They only reason the New York cops don't like him is because he was careless and got caught and exposed all the gang members, criminals and cowards in the NYPD.

If he hadn't got caught, he would be buddies with all of them.

Waving their thin blue line gang flag at all the precincts together like one ...

Let's remember that Marion Berry got caught on video buying coke from undercover FBI agents. DC reelected him and put up a statue of him in front of City Hall. This cop should get the same treatment.

If you think for one minute, that this guy is the only cop who does this, you are wrong! It’s a high percentage that do it, but he got caught. They don’t get paid enough, so they have to supplement their retirement savings. I know cops who take the cash, stacks of it. Their excuse is, it’s not drug...

That guy and anyone like him should be banned! In fact they should be served official notice that they are not permitted on the premise outside of reporting criminal activity and then should be charged with trespassing if they return!

No doubt those photos are for internal use by security. That the Post has them means there was a breach in security at 1PP which really should now call for an internal investigation.
