One does not get a PhD simply to get a job. Nor does anyone's PhD research have a whole lot to do with the kinds of work they end up qualified to do. I know many people with PhD's who are employed in areas which have precious little to do with their University studies. One has a PhD in Archeology and does cancer research. I also know many who became University professors and expanded their PhD research into a career.

In order to get his advanced degree, Marsian had to learn a lot more than how fish smell (like fish, of course) or, to be more precise how fish use their sense of smell. The only way anyone can waste years of education is by taking a course of study that doesn't require thinking.
