Sounds like your blocker is not being discriminating enough.

I use the "Junk Mail Controls" feature of the Mozilla Thunderbird email client on most of my accounts. There is one account that I manage with Microsoft Outlook (NOT Outlook Express) and on that one I use the SpamBayes add-in for Outlook.

Both products learn what YOU think is SPAM and adapt their filtering based on the emails that you mark as Junk/SPAM. I recommend using something like that.

As an alternative, you can set up a few filters on your email client.
The first one is the "Good Senders" filter. It looks at the sender and if it is one of the people you have marked as "good" it moves the mail to the inbox.
The second one is the "Good Subjects" filter. I get mail from some mailing lists that always include the name of the list surrounded by square brackets [BuffysVampireList]. Good subjects get treated like good senders and go into the inbox.

Everything else goes into Suspicious.

You can add a 3rd filter for known bad things if you want.
