I'm really amused (but that's not the right word... let's make that bemused) that two of the most polemic Miss USA final answers were about 2 things we take for granted here at home ... same-sex marriage and universal health care!

i always like to think of pageants as a job interview....i mean they are literally trying to obtain a one year contract for the job of Miss whatever. Thats why i believe that in a pageant it's good to have beliefs, but you should have a diplomatic answer for any controversial question. She could have very easily answered that she appreciates that each individual state is leaving it to the domecratic process to determine it's policies on same sex marriage....that would have left her personal opinion out of it. and after it all i like utah best.....shows what i know!!! (NT)j16:46:53 04/21/09 Tue
and often the pageant industry is supported by the gay community. if they think that you are against them, you might lose their support in sponsorship. and they are a big community, especially in the pageant industry. And think about Anita Bryant Miss America 1977 who had strong views against homosexuality and the gay community hated her. And in a way her sticking with the majority beliefs is in a sense selling out. Standing up for the minority is tough. (NT)patricia15:08:57 04/22/09 Wed
