21 year old Diana Schoutsen is no stranger to the world of fashion and pageantry. The York University student majoring in Kinesiology found her calling at this 2009 Miss Latina Canada event on Sunday August 24 2008, winning the title on national television as part of the first televised reality series in the country.
Diana had previously tried out for Canada’s Next Top Model and other national pageants; and while she may not have won those events, her calling seemed to be in the celebration of her cultural heritage. Schoutsen is both Latin American from her mother’s side (from Honduras) and Dutch, and has grown up on a dairy farm located in Binbrook Ontario, just north of Hamilton. Her country girl sincerity combined with her striking Latin-American features managed to captivate both the audience and judges.
Among an array of products and prizes, Diana will be taking a trip to the Dominican Republic as part of her ambassadorial work, visiting Hollywood California as part of a scholarship to the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios, and representing Canada at international events around the world. She will have a busy year as a spokesperson to many causes and businesses in the country including collaborating on a fundraiser for children in Honduras.
Miss Latina® Canada 2009 was an historical event for the Latin-Canadian community landmarking the very first national event in the country for the cultural community, with 22 women from across Canada competing for the national title. In the live televised taping on Sunday August 24, 2008 at the Holiday Inn Rooms & Suites in Markham, Ontario, 21 year old Diana Schoutsen of Halton Region was crowned the winner, in the organizations 5th year anniversary celebration.
1st Runner up was Rocio Challen of Montreal QC, 2nd runner up was Rosalba Vagge of Burnaby BC, 3rd runner up was Ana Laura Martinez Ibarra of Brampton ON, & 5th runner up was Johanna Almeida of London ON.
All 22 contestants were part of the Miss Latina® Canada 2009: The Reality Series, the first of its kind in Canada – and also the first time in 17 years that a pageant has been given national television time in the country. The season premiere aired on Thursday August 28, 2008 on Nuevo Mundo Television, and Diana’s win will be part of the season finale taking place on September 25th, 2008.
Diana’s very first appearance took place over the Labour day long weekend at Toronto’s oldest Hispanic Festival, where she was available for photos and autographs. We wish her all the best, and a successful year as Canada’s 2009 Latin-Canadian good will ambassador.
