Subject: MISS UNIVERSE CANADA FOR 2009 Author: Drew [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 13:24:42 07/21/08 Mon I've been reading all of the posts regarding Samantha Tajik not making the semis, and that she was plastic and it was no suprise not hearing her name called during the finals, re-creating Natalie clones...and how Canada doesn't have much to choose from, etc, etc, etc. There is some truth to everyone's points. However, I think that Canada does have some truly gorgeous girls, but they just aren't interested in competing, or the pageant scene doesn't appeal to them. With the disclusion of Samantha Tajik during the live telecast, it's true, there was no surprise there. She rocked the preliminaries and did her best. But there will always be other contestants that will do better. But I truly believe that she did have that international appeal as well....whether or not she made the finals, I think Sam did her best and that's all what we could ask for, when representing the country. As for repeats in the next edition of Miss Universe Canada, there will definitely be a batch of girls who want to try again and win it. Lina Lombana, Aleksandra Malkin, Genida Prifti, Claudia Olejnik....I'm sure will re-enter. Will they win? 80% chance...but no guarantee. Anyways, Miss Universe 2008 is over. Venezuela, who was my favorite for the crown won....just like when I called it for Canada in 2005. CONSISTENCY, presence, and confidence, the minute she steps in the host country is the main key. Subject Author Date Very true... I'm just bored of the same look we keep seeing.. the dark black/brown hair, european background- Natalie, Alice, Samantha all look the same. Inga with darker hair would be the same she reminded me of Natalie. Alexandra, Genida Prifi all those girls look the same... It's getting boring! Look at this years Miss Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela and DR, if you didn't hear them speak they look like they are from North America (Canada or US). I think Canada just needs a whole different type this year..maybe a Jennifer Hawkins type, she is so fresh!! Samantha is originally from Iran, and I don't know if you've studied Geography in school, but Iran is NOT in Europe. And Jennifer Hawkins is a European type too, just blonde. But the powerhouses (Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, USA) seem to produce strong delegates each year.. And even their girls that don't place, most are shocked they didn't ! If Canada wants to become a powerhouse (which I am assuming BOC wants to considering they are mostly from Latin backgrounds and are heavily involved in the Latin American market) They are certainly not showing Canada to be a powerhouse. I'm sorry to be rude, but they just didn't have it, and I could see that before they even arrived in Mexico or Vietnam. I just think something needs to be changed because after Natalie & Alice, Canadian pageant fans started to see a strong pattern and it was quickly shot downhill in 2007 and 2008. I think our representatives in 2003-2004 were even better choices. And with BOC's connections, training and resources we should not be going backwards. I think Canada is incredibly diverse and that should be our angle... Sending the last 4 delegates in a row that are tall, dark brown/black hair, tanned, and european OR exotic international look is not exactly being diverse. Just look at our last 4-5 Miss Universes.. Can you say Amelia, Jen Hawkins, Natalie, Zulekya, Riyo or Dayana look alike? NO way.. and we've even got 3 latinas in there that look totally different. If any country should be reproducing clones it would be Latin American ones! Not Canada! My arguement is that I just wish we could see more diversity.. Take chances! Natalie, Alice, Inga all 3 born in europe immigrating to Canada at young ages, all tall dark hair (well Natalie is Naturally lighter) but I was shocked they didn't darken Inga's hair, but she resembled Natalie A LOT.. All three of them even speak with a slight european accent.. Alice's being the least noticeable. Sam was tall/dark hair/tanned also, her look was european looking also, she could pass for Italian, Greek, yes she's from Iran, ok fine. She still looks alot like the other girls. And for Miss Universe: Amelia is latin with jet black hair, Jen Hawkins is beachy blond, Natalie dark haired european, Zuleyka is dark hair latin but her background is mixed (mulata), Riyo dark haired Asian (I'd love to see a blond asian lol) and Dayana blondish tanned latina.. Sorry I don't see any similarities here? Am I missing something? Well, starting myself, I am a long time pageant lover from Ontario and my nick-name is (NT) Jane 14:08:04 07/23/08 Wed Wow.....we've sparked up a little bit of a debate! I think that Canadian girls can be just as consistent as powerhouse countries in Miss Universe. But what type of girl are we looking for? That's the question! It has nothing to do with looking alike or not, it's more to do with a girl that will pack a punch the minute she arrives in the host country. Personally, I thought Sam had a chance, and I don't think she looked like past contestants. But with saying that, Sam was up against a strong group of girls who really wanted it. That's what we need-a girl who wants to win, who is consistent, yet likeable and to add the cherry on top: beautiful. Natalie, Leanne, Neelam, Kim, Alice-examples of determination! All of our opinions are going to differ, no matter what. I wanted Sahar to win-and alot of people will disagree with me. But Sam put forward a fight in a tough field of competitors, and I honestly think that she wasn't too far off ranking..... And that was the the second time in a row that someone for Toronto beat a Vancouver girl....which pissed me off. I wonder who is going to try out next year? The skepticism about the fairness of the judging no one can prove, however the obvious prepping and favourtism is definitely obvious, and now becoming a trend in the winners. THIS is what I feel is unfair. I think there were quite a few girls (runner ups & top 10) girls every year that if they had the same prepping and attention as our winners by BOC they could have been the winners. There is a definite unfairness we have all witnessed every year with Toronto girls. I also think we should be seeing more diversity in judges from ALL over Canada, and NO repeat judges! I'm tired of seeing that overweight grey haired italian guy on the panel and the other few same faces I have seen since 2005. I thought she lacked a tremendous amount of personality and I thought she wasn't very articulate, and knew she didn't have a chance. I wouldn't have crowned her, and it makes me think what kinds of questions do they ask in the interview process. It makes me ask how they can go from a Natalia to a Samantha in just a few short years.....bad judging.
