23-year-old chooses Miss Universe over the law

She kissed her dream of becoming a lawyer goodbye so she could embrace the stage and be a full-time performer and choreographer.

Now, Shannon MacKinnon is pursuing the crown of Miss Universe Canada and the chance to represent the country in the international competition this year in Vietnam.

"I no longer want to work in law, I now want to work in artistic education," said MacKinnon.

The 23-year-old, five-foot-seven beauty is one of two Edmontonians selected to compete with 60 other Canadian women in Toronto next month.

She was studying political science at the University of Alberta, but she put it on hold to pursue her love of dancing and performing arts.

"I missed dancing because I grew up dancing 65 to 70 hours a week," she said.

"University was very demanding. I quit dancing for a few months."

She said she struggled in an emotional tug-of-war between being a scholar and being an artist.

"And I know, I only have so many years that my body will co-operate with me before it starts to give me problems."

MacKinnon is not only passionate about dancing, she's also interested in charity work.

In the next couple of years, she wants to start her own art foundation for underprivileged children as well as her own performance company.

While those two are in the making, she works as a professional dancer and choreographer.

She does charity work for Edmonton Firefighter's Burn Treatment Society and wants to raise money for cancer research.

Joining a beauty pageant is something some of her friends least expected of her, while others thought it's a good fit, she said.

If MacKinnon doesn't get the national title, she's hoping to be a choreographer for So You Think You Can Dance, a popular reality TV show, when it comes to Canada.

I don't know how I feel about that picture--it's not very flattering nor professional (her shirt is too low). But her picture on the MUC website is stunning. (NT):)20:30:10 04/04/08 Fri
