Subject: Low Ratings: Good or Bad for Redemption?

According to Alane's post, BtVS got very low ratings for its repeat of Tabula Rasa, positively pummeled by a Gilmore Girls repeat.

I tend to be encouraged by the low ratings of late because I feel that perhaps it will alert ME, especially Joss Whedon, to the concept that maybe the viewers are not warming to the domestically violent and nihilistic approach to Buffy/Spike, the After School Special addiction storyline, the infantilization of Dawn, the dreary soapishness of Hells Bells, the humiliation and degradation of so many main characters all at once. If ME realizes this hasn't attracted viewers, perhaps they'll stop doing it and S7 will be much better. Or at least, something I would rather watch.

OTOH, there is a risk of blaming their low ratings on the prominence of Spike, on the fact that B/S had sex, or something like that. Perhaps they think that returning Spike to villain status will be a bigger draw than redeeming him and making him Buffy's feller. (Tho for me, tho I'd like Spike redeemed, making him a real villain would be preferable to him continuing to be Buffy's doormat.)

So which is it...will low ratings hurt or help our cause?
