Actually, it was about 20 years ago I started looking for a band as identical as possible to the original one that came with my Sportsman in December, 1962. Recently I found the exact look I was searching for at an antique/collectibles shop - the closest thing I could imagine to the one old photo I have which shows the original band with some detail. Hurray!! It's a Speidel with the curves for the round dial and the gold-filled tips. Condition comparable to watchcase and appropriate for the era. Also the gold color perfect - not the very bright gold Speidels currently display, or the "one size fits all" style, which would be "too modern."
I've been told somewhere - perhaps in this forum - Elgin used to use either actual Speidel-labeled bands or at least bands made by Speidel. Can someone here verify that?
Also, as I'm sure I've asked before, can someone give me the exact years Elgin Sportsman watches were produced? I don't happen to think my watch ever looked that "sporty" and am a bit surprised it would have been labeled as such. Any comments about that?
One more question: I like what Gene Stone, in his wonderful watch book, has to say about Elgin mechanicals. But you people on this forum: what is your opinion about how accurate I should expect a 1962 Elgin Sportsman mechanical to be - how many minutes off a day, how many times around should I have to wind it daily - without taking it to a watchmaker?
