I recently came across an old Elgin pocketwatch in fair condition and I've been trying to research it as best I can. the watch is gold plated, with very little wear save for around the rim or edge, I suppose that's referred to as pocket-wear. No dents or nicks in it and the glass on the face is in fair shape. The back of the watch is also made of glass so you can see the clockwork. It's a 17 jewel pocket watch. I used the serial number to look the watch up in an online database and found out that it was made in 1910 and there were 2000 of them made. I'm not sure if that meant that all 2000 had the same glass back. I know the glass back is uncommon, and from what I've learned they were used generally by the salesmen to peddle the watches to jewelry stores. When they'd make a sale, they'd get the same model for the store, but without the glass back. With the standard metal back instead. Is this a rare piece? I'm unable to find any more information on the glass back model, and nothing I've read about helps with appraisal of this particular type. It does run still and keeps time very well. If anyone can give me some more information or would like to speak with me about the watch I'd love some more info. please email me directly - dcromwell98@yahoo.com
