Hi!

My wife's dad passed some time ago and we're still going through his things. He was an antique collector. We recently found an Elgin pocket watch. After spending some quality time with Google, I found elginwatches.org, which is how I ended up here. Using that site I learned that it is made in 1896. It still works though I don't yet know how accurate it is. I also cannot figure out how to change the time on the thing. What actually brought me here, though, is some numbers on the watch.
Take a look: https://goo.gl/photos/yJMpSea5gq2WqWkC7

On the inside of the outside back cover is the manufacturer's name and a code (172198) which I'm guessing is from the case manufacturer. On the inside of the movement cover are two things. There is a stamped semicircle of numbers (172198) that matches the numbers from the other cover. Facing the other direction, which I had to initially read with a loupe, are tiny numbers neatly scratched in the gold. Each number is, I'm guessing, less than one millimeter tall. It's these numbers that have us curious.

Is doing this "a thing"? Was this from the owner? The manufacturer?

Any ideas? Thanks!
