Marine chronometers in their original wooden boxes are fairly scarce and desirable things. Typically, the front bezel is unscrewed, and the hands removed with a special tool and then another part (called the reflector) is removed in order to remove the movement from the case. If you're not familiar with how to do this, it's best to find a local watchmaker or jewler that advertises mechanical watch repair who - and this is important - does their work on-premises (as opposed to what a lot of places do that advertise repair, which is send it out to who-knows-where). You don't want to inadvertently do preventable and unrepairable damage if you don't have the right tools or are unfamiliar with how to do it. In good shape, it's quite valuable. If damaged, well....
Once you get the serial number, the age of the chronomter can be dated.
