John, Thanks for such a prompt reply and good advice. I was not about to mess with it figuring I would need an "old time jeweler" to get the serial #. It runs but loses about 10 minutes a day. Unused since the 1920's it is obviously in need of cleaning and/or adjusting.
I am aware that they generally have considerable value, but would like to pin it down somewhat. Since it is a family heirloom, I intend to pass it along to one of my sailing children. I assume the oldest it might be would be when "National" changed the name to "Elgin National". Do you know when that took place?.
It is possible my Grandfather first obtained it and he Skippered schooners from the 1890'to 1910's. His sextant was calibrated in 1918, so possibly the Cronometer is of that vintage.
